WOODROW WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS

The Woodrow Wilson Middle School athletics program offers interscholastic sports during the three seasons of the school year – fall, winter and spring. Students must have a current physical in order to try out and/or participate for these teams. Those physicals can be from the school health center (you must be a member) or from the child’s own physician on the school form or state physical form.   All physical forms must have the box checked that states the student can participate in athletic activities and competitive sports.  If selected to represent Wilson as a member of a team, uniforms will be issued, transportation to the sporting events will be provided and rules and regulations will be followed. These rules include proper school conduct in or out of school, passing grades and displaying leadership qualities. Grades will also determine if a student can try out and/or remain on a team. The student must not fail two classes  to be eligible. Some sports have study halls and many coaches check on their student-athletes’ grades throughout the season and often throughout the school year.

Our scholar-athletes will not only learn the skills necessary to play their sport, but also life-time skills of commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship and living active lifestyles. Practices/games can be held every school day and sometimes weekends and can last until 5:30pm depending on the sport. If school is closed (e.g. snow day) all activities will be cancelled as well. Playing a sport can be a valuable experience where one can learn to enjoy a sport for later use – be it in high school or for recreational purposes. Our coaches possess coaching permits and officials are from a certified board when available. Please encourage your child to try out and/or be a part of one of the athletic programs here at Wilson. Your support for your student-athlete and the program will be greatly appreciated.

Early each season, a Meet the Coaches Night or Meet and Greet will be held at the school. This event will give the parents and student-athletes a chance to hear from the coach what is needed to be a successful participant and supporting parent in the sport. It is mandatory that both the parent and student-athlete attend these nights. Important information such as practice and game schedules will be given and any questions can be answered. Those who are 2 or 3 season athletes must still attend the coach’s portion of the evening. All athletes' parents/guardians must attend these meetings.

In the event an athlete is injured and requires medical attention, the following guidelines should be followed:

The coach should be notified (if the injury was not already noted) and if needed, an accident report will be completed by the coach.

Report all injuries to the school nurse the next day.

If the athlete needs to see a physician, you may use your physician of choice.

When seen by a physician, the child must report to the school nurse upon return to school with a doctor's note stating when they are cleared to play. The athlete will not be able to return to practice or competition without a dated note from the physician and cleared by the school physician/nurse.

(Note: Our insurance company provides us with an excess policy which covers reasonable and customary charges above and beyond your personal insurance. If this is needed, contact the school nurse or Athletic Faculty Manager for information.( It is up to the parent /guardian to submit the completed form).

Transportation will be provided to away games/off site practices. Only parents can bring their child home from away games. This is a system-wide policy . A note prior to the contest should be given to the coach.

FALL SPORTS

The fall season sport athletes will have school physicals given in August. There may be some preseason conditioning offered for those who wish to try out for these fall sports. Check websites and mailings/messages for exact dates.
